Magic Glamping

Your adults-only retreat in the Algarve

Discover Tavira

One of our favourite day trips from Magic Glamping is to the enchanting town of Tavira, in the heart of the Eastern Algarve. It’s about an hour’s drive east, and every time we go, we’re reminded why this region feels so special. The East Algarve has its own rhythm—more peaceful, more traditional, and far less touristy than the busy western coast. It’s the Algarve at its most authentic.

The quiet charm of Tavira

Often called the “Venice of the Algarve” because of the Gilão River running through it, Tavira immediately charms you with its calm atmosphere and timeless beauty. The historic Roman bridge offers lovely views of whitewashed houses and fishing boats, and as you cross it, the gentle pace of the town invites you to slow down and breathe.

From there, we always wander into Praça da República, the central square, to enjoy a tea or coffee and watch the world go by. Tavira has a rhythm all its own—laid-back, sun-drenched, and full of local life without ever feeling overcrowded.

A Dutch treat at Aqua Sul

When lunchtime rolls around, we head to Aqua Sul, a welcoming restaurant owned by a Dutch expat. It’s tucked away down a side street and serves up creative Mediterranean dishes with Portuguese flair. The seafood is always fresh (the grilled octopus is a favourite), and the service is warm and relaxed—just like everything in Tavira.

A toast at Santa Lucia Lounge Bar

In the late afternoon, we love to unwind at Santa Lucia Lounge Bar, a stylish riverside spot with a laid-back vibe. With comfy seating and a view of the water, it’s a great place to sip a well-made cocktail or a crisp glass of wine. As the sun begins to set, there’s no better place to relax and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of Tavira.

Churches, cobblestones & culture

Tavira is also known for its many beautiful churches, like Igreja da Misericórdia with its stunning blue azulejo tiles. The narrow cobbled streets are filled with artisan shops selling everything from handmade ceramics to traditional cork products, and you’ll find little corners of history everywhere you look.

Off to the island

When we’re ready for a beach fix, we hop on the ferry to Ilha de Tavira—a short and scenic ride to one of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches. With soft sand, rolling dunes, and far fewer crowds than the western Algarve, Tavira Island is a quiet paradise, perfect for a walk, a swim, or a late afternoon drink at one of the beach cafés.

Why We Love Tavira

For us, Tavira is everything we love about the East Algarve—calm, authentic, and quietly beautiful. It’s close enough for a half-day trip, but rich enough in sights, flavours, and atmosphere that you’ll want to stay longer. Whether you're into food, history, or just enjoying the sunshine in a peaceful place, Tavira always delivers.

And every time we visit, we’re reminded: the East Algarve may be quieter—but that’s exactly its charm.
